Discernment
Counseling:
Deciding Whether to Stay or Go
The work helps you either repair and eventually stay together, or ease toward divorce. It is usually four sessions, and it has one goal: to help you both get clear about which direction you want, and why, before you commit to anything.
It is not couples therapy. You are not here to fix the relationship in the room. You are here to gain support and perspective so you can make what might be one of the most important decisions in your life: whether to stay or go. It is about making a confident, clear-eyed decision about what comes next, instead of staying stuck in the same argument for another year, decade or the rest of your life.
I offer discernment counseling by telehealth to couples in Texas and Colorado.
One of you is leaning out. One of you is leaning in.
Most couples who come to me for this are not on the same page, and that is exactly who this is for.
One of you may be leaning out. You have a foot out the door, or at least a serious question about whether to stay. Maybe you have already said the word divorce out loud, or maybe you have only said it to yourself. Maybe you’ve had an affair, or are frustrated that you can’t act on feelings for someone else.
The other one is leaning in. You want to save this. You would do the work tomorrow if the other person would just agree to it.
When you are that far apart, standard weekly couples therapy usually goes nowhere. The counseling office becomes a theatre for getting attention for being mistreated, more than it is a true collaborative space. When one of you hasn’t decided, is stalling, sabotaging and seeking negative attention, there is no forward momentum, and both of you end up more frustrated than when you started.
Discernment counseling is built for exactly this gap. It does not push you toward staying, and it does not push you toward leaving. It slows the decision down enough that you can actually see it.
Leaning out?
You may feel like you are already gone, and that coming in at all is dishonest. It isn’t. Discernment counseling does not ask you to try again or to promise anything. It asks only that you take a clear look at the decision before you make it final, so that whatever you choose is genuinely yours and not just the fastest way out of the tension. This helps you feel confident about your ultimate decision. This self-respect helps you build stronger future relationships and be a good role model to your children.
Leaning in?
You may be afraid that agreeing to this process means agreeing to the end of your relationship. It doesn’t. Discernment counseling gives the relationship a fair, honest hearing instead of a decision made in the middle of a fight. It also protects you: if the relationship does end, you will know you understood why, rather than spending years wondering what you missed, or being wrapped up in resentment, low self-esteem, or victimhood.
The three paths
Discernment counseling has a specific structure. By the end, you are choosing between three paths, and naming the path is the whole point.
Stay the course
Keep things as they are for now, and revisit later. Sometimes not deciding yet is the honest answer.
Move toward separation or divorce
Decide that this is the direction. It is ideal if you mutually arrive at your agreed-upon decision, which benefits everyone, especially your children. If it is not mutual, you can be empowered and supported to make a decision that you feel is best for you and your family, even if your partner does not agree.
Commit to a defined period of couples therapy
Take divorce off the table for six months and do the real work of rebuilding, with a full effort and a real timeline.
You do not have to know which path is yours when you start. Finding out is the work.
What to expect
Discernment counseling is usually four sessions. It combines time with both of you together and time with each of you individually, because the honest version of this decision often lives in what each person has not yet said out loud.
The sessions build on each other. In my practice they move through four questions:
What do I want a year from now?
When did my issues begin?
How will I strategize my fresh start?
Why did my early experiences influence my situation?
The work is not only about the relationship. It is about understanding the influences, conscious and subconscious, even intergenerational, that brought you to this crossroads. That is what builds agency: the belief that you have the power to influence your own life, whichever path you choose.
All of it is available by telehealth, together in the same room or from two different places, for residents of Texas and Colorado.
Discernment counseling is not couples therapy
This is the distinction that matters most, so it is worth being plain about.
Couples therapy
For couples who want to rebuild
It is ongoing, and the goal is a stronger relationship. If that is you, online couples therapy is the right starting point.
Discernment counseling
For couples who have not decided yet
It is short and structured, and the goal is not repair. It is clarity. You are deciding whether to do the work, not doing it yet.
Trying to do couples therapy before you have made that decision is why so many couples feel like therapy failed them.
Cost
My practice is private-pay. I provide a superbill you can submit to your insurance for possible out-of-network reimbursement, and payment plans, sliding scale, and veteran and student discounts are available.
Common Questions
What happens during discernment counseling?
You meet for a short series of sessions, usually four, that combine joint conversation with individual time. Each session helps you understand your own part in the decision more clearly, and by the end you choose one of the three paths: stay the course, move toward separation, or commit to a defined period of couples therapy.
What is discernment counseling?
It is a structured process for couples on the fence about whether to stay together. Its goal is not to save or end the relationship, but to help you both reach a clear, confident decision about which direction to take, and why.
What are the three paths of discernment counseling?
Stay the course for now, move toward separation or divorce, or take divorce off the table and commit to a defined period of couples therapy. Naming the path you actually want is the goal of the process.
Does discernment counseling work?
It is designed to produce clarity, not a particular outcome. Couples who complete it leave with a clear decision and a real understanding of how they reached it, rather than staying stuck in the same unresolved question. A clear decision to separate is as valid an outcome as a decision to recommit.
Can we do discernment counseling online?
Yes. I work entirely by telehealth with couples in Texas and Colorado. You can attend together in one room or from two separate places.
Not sure if this is the right fit?
That is what a first conversation is for. Book a free 15-minute consult and we can talk through where you are and whether discernment counseling is the right next step.
